His solo works are expansive but include "Field Work", "Heartbeat", "Beauty" and "Plays The Piano", collaborations with David Sylvian ("Forbidden Colours", "Bamboo Houses", "Heartbeat"), many soundtracks including "Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence", "The Last Emperor" and "The Handmaid's Tale" and experimental work with Fennesz and Alva Noto.

To date, he is the only artist to ever have a number 1 single in Japan with an entirely instrumental piece ("Energy Flow").
