American country-rock singer-songwriter from Virginia.

His style is political and uncompromising alt-country.

He has sung duets with an incredible array of singers including Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams and Iris Dement.

He came to prominence with the albums 'Guitar Town' (1986) and 'Copperhead Road' (1988).
