Copenhagen-based English jazz multi-instrumentalist and composer who first found fame with the jazz orchestra Loose Tubes in the 1980s.

Aligning himself with the avant-garde jazz movement, Bates was, in 2010, appointed visiting professor of jazz at the Royal Academy of Music. A year later he was made Professor of Jazz at HKB Bern Switzerland - Europes's oldest Conservatory of Jazz.
