The Art Ensemble of Chicago are an avant-garde jazz band formed in 1969, but with their roots stretching back to 1966 (as the Roscoe Mitchell Sextet).

Founder members, saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell and trumpeter Lester Bowie are still with the band.
