Single Review

Taken from the bands forthcoming second album, Teenage Blood, Mr Williams and his Boat people show once more why they have been justifiably championed by the likes of Tom Robinson and Steve Lamacq, amongst others.

Tom Williams has previously shown - on last years See My Evil EP and Too Slow album - that he is not one to be afraid of delivering deeply dark lyrics that revolve around subjects of love, relationships, loss, pain, revenge, and the all-too-often bitterness (equally, bittersweet-ness) that they encompass. Here on My Bones he again goes for the jugular.

As it opens to a steady drum beat, working in alongside some nice synth and violin passages and Williams own gravely vocal, we hear the tale of how at midnight the previous day he was given back various belongings, a signed photograph/a fashion shot/you said chivalry wasnt dead/thats good. But dont be expecting any mournful little ditty here. As Williams unveils in his narrative to the listener of the lost love whose photo he still has in his pocket and whom he still loves from the marrow of my bones, you may sympathise with his situation, but this toe-tapper of a tune doesnt so much make you want to sit down and weep, as get up and bop around the room.

Its the kind of thing Leonard Cohen might turn out, if he came from Tunbridge Wells - and had a boat. Those new to Tom Williams will undoubtedly be driven to investigate his back catalogue, whilst those who have already done so will be hoping that 2012 is the year this particular Boat well and truly sets its sails to the wind.
