Paolo Nutini @ Electric Ballroom Live Review

Live Review

For somebody who has gained critical success and has numerous chart topping singles under his belt, the electric ballroom in Camden seemed a somewhat modest venue for Paulo Nutinis gig returning to London. Those lucky enough to secure tickets to this sold out venue were anxiously waiting in the crowd for his highly anticipated return and a taste of what to expect from his new album, Sunny Side Up (released 1st June).

His raspy voice compliments his lyrics perfectly and there is an obvious raw passion in his performance. A few songs in Nutini took to the stage alone, hunched over his guitar seemingly oblivious to the screaming fans below. The audience took to his new songs well making it look like his upcoming album is set for success. Those who may have come along to see him perform his old hits will have been kept waiting as this set was more focused on previewing his newer material. Nevertheless, the audience loved it and were left wanting more.

The new album promises to be an eclectic fusion of different sounds, brought to life perfectly with the band that joined him on stage. Fans were treated to a eucalayle and harmonica player in addition to his band, giving the gig a mixture of a jazz and country feel. He even threw in a rendition of The Jungle Books Bare Necessities in the middle of his set, showing this Scot has a sense of humour and playfulness with his performances. Towards the end of his set we were treated to a more 80s soft rock sound with one song having a Chris Rea-esque feel to it. It was a good diverse mix of sound bringing in an equally diverse medium of fans.

Nutini finished his set with his single, New Shoes and the crowd clung on to every word. Eager for more, fans were treated to an additional two new songs in the encore before finishing with the clear favourite of the night, Jenny Dont Be Hasty. This gig was a welcome return for Paulo Nutini. Fans were not left disappointed and were shown that they can expect more great material from this young singer.
