Live Review

Third Light stormed through an epic set at the weekend, setting the bar high for bands following them on the bill later in the night at Brixton Jamm on Saturday evening. Formed in 2005 with David Wallis on lead vocals, Mike Payne on lead guitar/production/noise, Mark Dainty on drums, and Martin Bell on bass, the band quickly got the crowd going with their grandiose instrumental opener, Built By Machines.

The band pride themselves on playing epic, unforgettable rock tunes for the masses and have recently raised their game, gigging all over our fair capital like its going out of fashion. Mike Paynes energetic jumping-about-stage, and Martins playing-as-though-his-life-depended-on it was clearly reflected by the crowd as they looked on. Third Light are a great live band, and the passion for their own music filled the room at the Jamm.

The tunes were peppered with melodic, hypnotic synths and explosive hooks as they blasted out power-pop meets energy-fuelled indie (think Feeder or Jimmy Eats World). Their playlist included Faster Than Fiction, the poppy Lucky Day, and Feeling High amid the odd bit of microphone banter and a shout-out to the bassists hometown in deepest, darkest Yorkshire! Not a ballad in sight, Third Light galloped through the setlist with the enthusiasm of a hurricane.

Next came Leaders and Followers, Third Lights first single (out now), which got the bands own regular followers pumped up and singing along. Leaders and Followers is a classic anthem in the making with strong riffs and a catchy chorus.

Third Light are clearly going places (seen the light, natch!) and are currently self-producing their debut album, due for release later this year. Highly recommended live.
