Single Review

Liverpudlian 4-piece Screaming Lights rock out on their new double A-side single! They do!

Originality is key for Screaming Lights. Penned as indie/alternative/experimental on their MySpace, theyre certainly not going to be visited by Trading Standards any time soon.

GMN, written by lead singer James Treadall a long time ago, is an energetic triumph. Upon first hearing the start of the track, one is met with a sense of foreboding another rubbish Casio keyboard bites the dust. And then whoosh! GMN kicks in leaving nu rave in last summer where it belongs, leading into a fabulous blast of energystrong, purring guitars, foot-tapping melodies, forceful vocalsthe perfect recipe for any self-respecting newcomer indie-track.

A creative Editors for the new generation, Screaming Lights Treadell uses a plethora of synths and tuneful piano chords to support their energetic guitar-driven sound. These guys, having enthusiastically supported Vampire Weekend, Mystery Jets and Golden Silvers over the past year, are really going places with their atmospheric rock, hinting at an influence of Interpol, perhaps Los Campesinos! and a little bit of Blur.

Double A-sider Glow is a lesser-force. Its positively Britpoppy in comparison, catchy with grimier vocals, demonstrating that Screaming Lights are clearly are a talented bunch, capable of creating a rainbow of diverse sounds and moods although perhaps unsure of their identity.

If you like the sound of the Lights, theyre currently on tour around the UK. See you at the front.
