The plot centres on a middle-aged refuse-collector who cheats death, plays baseball and builds a fence to keep the Grim reaper at bay.

The 2013 production starred Lenny Henry.

In 2016 Denzel Washington produced the multi Oscar-nominated film, "Fences" based on the play.
