Peter Maxwell Davies

[d 2016] English composer and conductor, also a CBE and Master of the Queen's Music.

He has conducted many established orchestras including the BBC Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra and composed symphonies, chamber pieces, opera and ballet.

In the '60s, he was something of a 'subversive' character, often arranging parodies of familiar classical works.

Key pieces include "Eight Songs For A Mad King", "The Martyrdom of St Magnus" and "Naxos Quartets".
