During the 60s and 70s, Perkins worked with Leonard Cohen, Stephen Stills, Shiloh, Emmylou Harris, Gram Parsons and Bob Dylan and also joined The Desert Rose Band with ex-Byrds guitarist Chris Hillman.

He has sessioned for Wynonna Judd, Garth Brooks and Tori Amos.
