San Francisco rock band, active from 1965 to 1974 and the precursor to Jefferson Starship and Hot Tuna.

Key members included Grace Slick, Marty Balin, Jorma Kaukonen, Paul Kantner, Jack Casady, Spencer Dryden and Skip Spence.

Their break-through album came in 1967 in the form of "Surrealistic Pillow", featuring the songs "White Rabbit" and "Somebody To Love".

Founder member Paul Kantner passed away in 2016.
