Alexander McQueen - Genius of a Generation

"The Icon: Born in London in 1969, Alexander McQueen was a British Fashion Designer, known for his eclectic tastes and unconventional designs.

The McQueen mix of outrageous theatre, stunning and provocative design, and precise tailoring led to continued success in the fashion world. His shows were renowned for their controversy, some fashion experts deplore his "shock tactics" and publicity seeking, while others defend his exploration of radical ideas. The latter see his shows as questioning accepted notions of fashion and beauty.

In less than ten years into his career McQueen became one of the most respected fashion designers in the world. In October 1996 he was appointed Chief Designer at the French Haute Couture House Givenchy where he worked until March of 2001. In December 2000, 51% of Alexander McQueen was acquired by the Gucci Group, where he remained Creative Director. Expansion followed and included the opening of flagship stores in New York, London, Milan, Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

Throughout his career, McQueen was recipient of numerous awards for achievement in fashion, and in 2003 was awarded a CBE.

McQueen committed suicide in his London home in February 2010, possibly prompted by his mother's death a few days earlier.

Kristin Knox pays tribute to the late Alexander McQueen, discussing his impact on the fashion world, in an illustrated talk covering some of his most iconic and controversial designs."
