The Furious Five, along with Grandmaster Flash back in the late 70s, were a pioneering Hip Hop band. The band were later fronted by Melle Mel.

In 2007, the band, along with Grandmaster Flash were inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame - the first rap act inducted.
