• Play
  • Equus is a play (and later film) written by award-winning English playwright Peter Shaffer, with religious and sacrificial themes.

"When Alan Strang mysteriously blinds six horses, it is left up to the distinguished child psychiatrist Martin Dysart to discover what happened. Strang's overbearing mother and his stoic father play an active part in the case, along with an affectionate stable-girl, as Dysart gradually uncovers what forces drove the teenager to commit the appalling act. Themes of religion, ritual sacrifice and sexuality are combined in this dark tale which examines the conflict between personal values and institutions."
