Win tickets to the Street Sounds UK Fresh 2016 - 30th anniversary

Posted: 7 years ago
UK Fresh marks 30 years since the seminal UK Fresh 86 event at Wembley Arena in 1986. Win tickets to the 1st October 2016 event.

"UK Fresh... is it Fresh?"

So went the line from the theme tune for UK Fresh '86, by Hashim (of "Al-Naafyish (The Soul)" fame).

1986 was a pivotal moment for Hip Hop, as it was now being called (instead of "Electro" or "Electro-Funk") and was reflected in the title of Street Sounds' seminal "Electro" series, with "Hip Hop" being prefixed to the first release of that year, "Street Sounds Hip Hop Electro 11", featuring Roxanne Shante, Hashim, Captain Rock and more. UK Fresh was a plan to stage the largest Hip Hop event the UK had ever seen, being staged at Wembley Arena, taking Hip Hop/ Electro to the masses for the first time in the UK.

If you remember those times, or even if you don't, you will probably know the impact the Street Sounds label had on UK music and it was them that provided the soundtrack for that event, "Hip Hop Electro 13", featuring many of the artists that played the summer UK event, including Grandmaster Flash, Captain Rock, Just-Ice, Hashim and many more. The event was championed by then Capital Radio DJ, Mike Allen, who sadly passed away in December last year. His influence on Hip Hop in the UK can also not be understated.

Fast-forward thirty years (yes, really) and Street Sounds are going to mark the 30th anniversary with a special gig at the Qube Project in London on Saturday 1st October, running from 8pm until late. The event will feature Just-Ice, who was at the Wembley Arena event thirty years ago, as well as popular Electro act, Newcleus, best known for "Jam On Revenge (The Wikki-Wikki Song)", who appeared on the first Street Sounds Electro compilation, as well as Electro 3, Street Sounds 6 and Crucial Electro 3.

DJs on the night include: DJ XRated, Street Sounds supremo, Morgan Khan plus Andy Smith and Rob Hardman, with the night also featuring B-Boys, BMXs and Graffitti - all the ingredients for some good '80s Hip Hop!

It's nice to note that the night will also serve as a tribute to the late radio DJ, Mike Allen.

The night cost £29.50 for limited early-bird tickets, rising to £35 once those have all gone (all plus fees). Available from the Street Sounds website: www.streetsounds.co
