Win a pair of tickets to celebrate Street Sounds 30th anniversary in London
Posted: 1st November 2012
Lovers of classic Brit-funk and US/UK electro will be familiar with the influential Street Sounds label, but newcomers might be surprised to learn that the imprint is still very much alive and kicking it. To prove this point, label-owner Morgan Khan's StreetWave offshoot empire has reached the grand old age of 30 years old and to celebrate, it's party time.
South London venue the Coronet Theatre will host a massive anniversary bash on 17th November, featuring stars from the past and performers from the future. Taking a lead from its own pioneering soul, electro and hip-hop releases in the '80s, Street Sounds 30 will feature a full hour-long set from esteemed US funk-act The Fatback Band, plus shorter sets from electro-queen Shannon ('Let The Music Play' is still a banger today), Def Jam rap-star and producer Davy DMX and lead-singer of the electro-soul outfit Aleem, Mr Leroy Burgess ('Get Loose').
Joining them will be Kurtis Mantronik, a legend of studio-trickery and hip-hop gymnastics with Mantronix ('Needle to the Groove'), Brit-funk icons Second Image ('Special Lady'), Imagination's Leee John ('Body Talk') and Galaxy featuring Phil Fearon ('What Do I Do?'/ 'Dancing Tight'). The evening will also feature graffiti competitions, B-Boy breakdancers and upcoming DJs.
All these performers have at one point been featured on at least one Street Sounds' collection in the past, or are synonymous with the hugely-popular '80s funk scene. It's quite a line-up - if you've ever been a part of the Manchester or London '80s soul-funk scene and you're still excited every time you slip a copy of Electro 6 or Street Sounds Hip Hop 22 out of its sleeve, you'll dig this. So, how about going along for nothing - fancy that?
