Legally Blonde is probably still best known as a 2001 US rom-com about ditsy Elle Woods, a sorority girl (played by Reese Witherspoon) who pursues a law career in order to win the affections of the man she loves (am I typing these words?).

The film did well enough to spawn a sequel, 'Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde', as well as a third, straight-to-DVD yawn about something. But Witherspoon's celebrated comic performance in the original is not diminished by the sequels, vicariously kept alive by the hugely successful musical adaptation.

Making its premiere in San Francisco in 2007, Legally Blonde: The Musical soon moved to Broadway where it often grossed more than $1M a week. The show made its West End debut in late 2009 at the Savoy Theatre, where it still shows.

The London show originally cast Sheridan Smith as Elle, followed by Susan McFadden (sister of ex-Westlifer Brian) and now ex-Hollyoaks actress Carley Stenson, who took over last month. The musical won three Olivier Awards in March 2011, including Best New Musical and Best Actress in a Musical (for Sheridan Smith).
