Psst! can you keep a secret? Darren Hayes announces October 2011 album and UK tour
Posted: 20th July 2011
Let's get one thing quite clear - back in the '90s, it really wasn't considered 'cool' to like Aussie pop-makers and million-sellers, Savage Garden, mainly because they were too, erm, pop for many critics' tastes. Try telling that to their legion of fans in the UK, Germany, US and Australia - they helped buy enough copies of the self-titled debut album to send it into platinum-status, continuing the feat with the 1999 follow-up, "Affirmation". And then the duo split...
Darren Hayes in solo-mode hasn't been quite as phenomenal, but he's still chalked-up three Top 20 albums in the UK AND even got props from NME for his single "Pop!ular" in 2004! Now for the first time in over three years, Hayes returns with a brand-new album and a handful of UK shows that are sure to sell-out pretty quickly - the man has a devoted fan-base, shall we say.
"Secret Codes and Battleships" is the result of collaborations with producers and writers from around the world who have worked with Leona Lewis, The Wanted, Lady Gaga, Nicole Sherzinger and Natalie Imbruglia, amongst others. To celebrate its release in October, Hayes will be performing material from it and his catalogue, both solo and Savage Garden-esque. No doubt, Billboard's recent announcement that SG's "Truly, Madly, Deeply" has been deemed #1 in the Top 100 Adult Contemporary Songs Ever, might spur him to sing it on the nights!
First stop on the Secret Tour is Liverpool on 15th October, followed by Glasgow, Birmingham and London (Shepherd's Bush) on the 19th. Tickets are on sale on Sunday (yes, SUNDAY) at 9am. You might have to put the eggs, bacon, toast and coffee on hold to grab these. Prices start at £25, rising to £28.50.
In addition, Darren Hayes is also playing a special exclusive New Year's Eve show in Manchester at the city's Academy venue. It's a huge all-nighter with The Candle Thieves in support and a 2-hour set from Hayes and his band - and a ticket-price commanding £99 admission!
