In 1956, an impromptu jam session at the Sun Studios in Memphis saw the brief (but legendary) formation of pop's first supergroup. That the least famous of the four was rockabilly legend Carl Perkins, hints at why the group earned the sobriquet 'Million Dollar Quartet'.

Perkins' fellow musicians in Tennessee on Tuesday 4th December 1956 were Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Elvis. The session seemingly came together by accident. Perkins, who'd already enjoyed success with his song 'Blue Suede Shoes' was rehearsing in the studio with Lewis when Presley, who famously covered Perkins' biggest hit, dropped into the studios on a social visit.

He was already the biggest rock'n'roll star on the planet and, along with Cash - who also arrived by chance - made up the Million Dollar Quartet.

The stage musical 'Million Dollar Quartet', written by Floyd Mutrux and Colin Escott, dramatises the session. The show premiered in the US in 2007 in Florida. The Broadway production opened at the Nederlander Theatre in 2010 and in London's West End in February 2011, at the Noël Coward Theatre.

Tickets for the West End show are now available until April 2012, as Million Dollar Quartet continues its residency at the Noël Coward Theatre. Prices start at £45 but we have a special offer on some tickets.
