Pygmalion [Old Vic]

For fans of George Bernard Shaw, this may prove to be a special treat. His acclaimed comedy-play "Pygmalion" is set to run at the Garrick Theatre in London's West End until 3rd September, with the starring roles currently occupied by renowned Rupert Everett and Eastenders actress, Kara Tointon. Despite being over a century old, Shaw's humourous tale of old Laandan Taaan is strangely poignant today.

The story centres on Professor Higgins' study of phonetics on a wet and windy day in Covent Garden. He becomes fascinated by a young cockney flower-seller, Eliza Doolittle (not the pop star, although I guess that's where she got her name from). By mutual agreement, he attempts to teach her 'how to talk proper', rather than 'gaw blimey', by virtue of elocution lessons. However, a wager with an acquaintance turns into an obsession with power for Higgins as he starts moulding Doolittle into a perfect lady for high society.
