Now, we're not ones to blow our collective trumpets, but occasionally a song pokes its head above the gloomy pop cloudscape and dissolves all and sundry with the three simple 'pop' rules - make it simple, make it memorable and make it genuine. We gave some props to Katy B last year - now another young lady is waiting in the wings.
One such song that positively leaps out of the blocks is Manchester-Iranian DJ Yasmin's new single, "On My Own", which I only started playing out of curiosity. It's a bit of a slammer, partly due to its hooks and chorus, partly due to the near-Massive Attack backing and predominantly due to the old 'Amen Brother' break rearing its remixed head, albeit given some clattering-handclap action. And I'm liking the extended drum-break at the end...You can watch the official video for the song right here - it's released in a couple of weeks.
Meanwhile, Yasmin has been confirmed as support on Chase and Status' UK tour in March, touching down in Southampton (9th), Cambridge (10th), Yeovil (12th) and Nottingham (13th) - tickets are still available for £15.
In addition, you can catch Yasmin in solo mode as part of the HMV Next Big Thing 2011 gig-series at the London Jazz cafe on 11th February (with Wretch 32 and Jodie Connor) - tickets are just a tenner!
In 2011, she surely has to be a name to keep an eye and both ears on, along with Clare Maguire and the aforementioned Katy B.
