Released earlier this week, Elvis 75 marks what would have been the king of Rock 'n Roll's 75th Birthday (which would have been tomorrow - Friday 8th January 2010).

How many tracks does a 75th birthday disk need to mark such an occasion... now let me see... oh yes, how about 75 slices of good old and (and some new-ish) Rock 'n Roll? Yeah, that ought to do the trick!

It was all the way back in 1954 that Elvis recorded his ground-breaking single 'That's Alright Mama' at the now legendary Sun studios in Memphis, changing the face of music in the process, by combining black rhythm and blues with white country and western, spawning Rock 'n Roll.

Elvis 75 focuses on the hits which made it big this side of the pond, with the exception of the aforementioned 'That's Alright Mama', which is the last track of the compilation, but never broke this side of the pond. The earliest UK hit is 1956's 'Heartbreak Hotel', which hit the top-spot in the US, peaking at number two over here - presumably missing-out on the number one spot due to the fact that the Brits were still reeling from what their ears were hearing. As well as the more obvious 'Jailhouse Rock', 'Blue Suede Shoes', 'All Shook Up', 'Are You Lonesome Tonight', 'Can't Help Falling in Love', 'Viva Las Vegas' and 'Suspicious Minds' are the perhaps less-obvious: 'One Broken Heart For Sale', 'Moody Blue' and 'Rags to Riches', as well as sixty-odd others.

Also included on the compilation are the more recent remixes of 'A Little Less Conversation' (by JXL), which topped the charts around the world in 2002 and 'Rubberneckin' (remixed by Paul Oakenfold in 2003).

Elvis 75 is released as both a three disk compilation and a four disk box-set, the four disk version featuring 100 tracks and an 80 page booklet featuring rare photographs as well as a new essay by musical and cultural critic Billy Altman (Rolling Stone, The New Yorker).

The four disk box-set is dubbed 'Elvis 75 - Good Rockin' Tonight' and retails at just under £50 (£19.49 as a download), with the standard three disk version coming-in at just under 12 English pounds.
