Dame Julie Andrews to perform one-off show at The O2, May 2010
There is nothing, apparently, quite like a Dame. And twelve years after a throat operation seriously impaired her singing voice, one of our most popular, Dame Julie Andrews, is ready to perform in public again.
The 74-year-old soprano will be performing songs from her glittering musical past, as well as more recent offerings from the Shrek films and The Princess Diaries, in An Evening With Julie Andrews. The Academy Award-winner will also read from Simeon's Gift, the children's book she wrote with her daughter.
Andrews, who won her Oscar in 1965 for her role as Mary Poppins, will perform with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for the one-off concert.
In a statement, Dame Julie, who also starred in another enduring musical phenomenon, The Sound Of Music, said:
To perform once again in my homeland on the London stage will be a wonderful moment - it is where it all began for me.
Quite when Dame Julie Andrews will next return to sing in her home country after next May, if ever, is not clear. For now, at least, the O2 concert will be her opportunity to say/sing so long, farewell. Auf wiedersehen. Adieu.
