Lenny Henry's Othello Brings Great Tragedy to the West End for September 2009

Posted: 14 years ago

The highly-acclaimed performance of Shakespeare's 'Othello' featuring Lenny Henry in the lead role will finally reach the West End in September. The production will take up residence at the Trafalgar Studios in Whitehall, London for an initial period of 3 months starting on Fri 11th Sep 2009 until Sat 12th Dec 2009.

The character of Othello demands a big personality and a big voice to carry this engaging part and Henry appears to have achieved this with a critically-appreciated sessions at the West Yorkshire Playhouse and the Rose Theatre in Kingston much to some journos' surprise. However the comedy artist seems to have stepped up to the plate and made the part his own - he is certainly qualified having experienced many of the controversial themes contained in the tragedy - particularly racism and love. But regardless of the high-profile lead, the story is engaging and poignant in equal measure enough and Henry has certainly proven to be a wise choice for the tragedy. I recommend Othello as an excellent starting point for ticking off Shakespeare plays. Tickets cost £35 + booking - nearest tube is Charing Cross.
