Pop Idol 2002 runner-up Gareth Gates tonight makes his debut performance in the West End as Joseph at the Adelphi.

The pop singer who has four number ones under his belt was officially handed the coat of 'many a garish hue' by 'Any Dream Will Do' winner Lee Mead back in November 2008. Lee made his last performance as Joseph last month on Saturday 10th January.

On receiving the coat, Gareth had this to say:

I have a lot to thank Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat for as it is the reason I first started singing, after being chosen to play the lead in a school production when I was eight years old. Ever since then it's been a dream of mine to appear in a West End musical. I am really honoured to be appearing at the Adelphi, stepping into that famous coat and really can't wait to get stuck in!

Tickets for tonight's show are like gold dust, but many other dates are available.

A separate production of Joseph will be touring the UK from next week, calling at the Liverpool Empire (Mon 16th Feb to Sat 21st Feb), then Dundee, Edinburgh, Sunderland and Torquay.
