Single Review

Presented with a single taken from the forthcoming fourth album from a band that have been together since 1999 and one would naturally be inclined to expect something pretty tight, no? Hmmm...

The opening of the synth-loving Swedish band, The Sounds' 'Something To Die For' (though not it's radio edit) gives the impression of a synth-ridden sci-fi film soundtrack with pitch bent synth chords sliding around before overdriven guitar crunches in. A run down the scale then heralds the launch into the tracks' main groove, and drums also kick in. What follows is a rewind to the 'eighties, but even more so than The Sounds' wannabe electro-pop contemporaries (Goulding, La Roux et al.), and, if anything, more Kim Wilde. Predictable harmonies also run through the track which is effectively nothing more than just another synth-pop track by just another synth-pop band. Behind youthful sounding lead vocals, cheesy backing vocal harmonies also offer a sound link with the most famous Swedish band in history...

Despite having criticised the track, however, it still remains an undeniably toe-tapping catchy number; in a synth-ridden, Eurovision kind of way.
