Live Review

Pink-tinged, lined with cup cakes and adorned with glittering chandeliers, one might have thought they'd stepped into Bush Hall for Katie Price's album launch event. However luckily for the diverse crowd this was not to be. Jake Morley stepped onto an overcrowded stage to a warm reception from dedicated fans, yet he was to put on a superb show even for myself, a newcomer to his music. Exuding energy the cheeky chappy beat, battered and bruised his guitar for every possible sound it could execute. He inarguably had command over the instrument as if it was an extension of his own arm, regularly switching to his trademark playing style with it resting face up on his lap.

Although his writing was no Bob Dylan piece, he delved into thoughts and feelings that the majority of his crowd could now or previously relate to, creating a sweet honesty to his music.. 'Pondering On a Scenario In Which I Am the Hero' expressed his desire to be recognised for doing something great, whilst 'Many Fish To Fry', his new album's title track, explored the confusing but exciting time when you can see all the possible directions your life could take.

He was at his best with his full band complete with a saxophone and harmonica...even a choir of his friends at some points in the evening. Its upbeat pop sound created a party atmosphere on and off stage. His audience eagerly joined in clapping, singing and on occasions dancing (Top marks to the jolly lady who elegantly tripped in front of the stage in an effort to join her group of jiving friends!)

Jake hosted a very personal evening. So much so that I almost felt like I was gatecrashing a family party. However I was extremely proud on behalf of his parents! He was obviously extremely pleased and honoured to be there performing in front of the crowd. He sung with feeling, giving the utmost fight to his song lines with the use of Craig David style hand gestures. So when I exited the venue to be greeted by a dark wet London and a soggy bike, I still had that warm fuzzy feeling to get me home in high spirits!
