Single Review

'Notbroken' is the second single to be released from The Goo Goo Dolls' August album release 'Something for the rest of us'.

New York rockers The Dolls are a band that are easy on the ear. Melodic, tuneful, good chord sequences, strong choruses, lyrically sound, and this pretty much sums up their latest single. A good, solid rock song held together with a mixture of soft guitar work and some useful rockier riffs later on, steady bass and drums, decent lyrics, and to begin with, some string accompaniment. Writer and lead vocalist John Rzeznik is a solid performer and this single isn't necasarily a let down, but I don't feel that it stands out for any reason.

I don't think any boundaries have been stretched with this one, and I can't see it drawing in a whole new generation of fans, but those familiar with their work will appreciate this. It doesn't really hit the heights of previous singles such as 'Name' (1995), 'Iris' and 'Slide' (1998), but The Goo Goo Dolls have their place and it is good to hear a solid album from them and also good to see them touring the UK at the moment. They are an excellent band - nearly 10 million records sold over their 25 year career illustrates that, but their best work is some years past.

This single won't chart so high in this country, but another safe and steady release from The Dolls and certainly worth a listen.
