In Memphis - The Weisstronauts EP Review

The Weisstronauts

EP Review

Recorded pretty much overnight at Tennessee's Ardent Studios during a brief gap in their June 2008 tour (with additional touch-ups later on at Vermont's Verdant Studio), The Weisstronauts' 4-track EP is an instrumental country surf number with a spicy Memphis kick. The Bostonians have opted for three lead guitarists, one bassist, drummer and vibraphone player over any kind of vocalist. While that may not be to everyone's taste, I feel it quite an ingenious way to showcase several sparkling musical solos with the songs themselves exactly what you would imagine from their titles.

'Last Train To Shartlesville' is a speedy little ditty that will have you spinning on the floor, 'Cat Burglar' slinks in its own elegancy, 'Ode To Billie Joe' has a classic southern sound, whilst 'Exit Sandman' mesmerises with a groove in all the right ways. Alternative with a slight bite, just the way I like it.
