Album Review

Welcome back A Band Called Quinn for their second album in just over a year. With the gravitas of Ian Rankin in the sleeve notes and a well received UK tour the Scottish four-piece seem primed to deliver a wonderful follow-up.

With songs recorded for the 'Vanishing Point' theatre group, Quinn have taken a step back from the previous indie pop of 'Sun Moon Stars' and tried out a few new theatrics. From the opening electro sparkle 'Here to us' to 'Wolf Cries Boy' we're treated to a mix of ten vibrant songs, which drift through smoky jazz like 'History' to classic Brit Pop ('We Are the Scum'). Louise Quinn's voice is diverse enough to tackle most genres but sits right when she is challenged with the venom of 'Consequence Waits' where she can snake her voice from a whisper to a gallop. They are let down weak production; the guitars and drums are far too weedy to fulfil their duties. If they had a few more pennies spent in the studio they could have ended up with something quite special.

They describe themselves as apocalyptic pop. This won't devastate the charts but hopefully make enough minor shock waves to find a decent audience. This deserves to be heard outside of its Glasgow beginnings.
