Album Review

You have to admire Hammersmith's (or should I say, 'Ammersmif's') Limozine - 10 songs, 26 minutes, no filler - that's how album's should be (provided they don't charge anymore than a tenner of course!). Purporting to being 'punk rock n roll', something I cannot argue with quite frankly, this quartet sound realistically brow-beaten and pissed-up on tramp fuel enough to excite a few dozen ginger-raising regulars down the Albion, but can they carry it off on record (well, CD)? For the most part, they've pretty much cracked it.

Their debut single heads up this second album - 'El Presidente' is a Dead Boys-cum-Stooges gobbing little ASBO of a tune and a great trashy loud tune. Their recent moon-at-your-mum anthem ,'You Da Boss', a song released as a single and adored by our very own Adrian, is more of the same - raucous rantings laid thread-bare over a neat riff that reminds me of Department S's 'Is Vic There?'.

And that's the thing with this album - none of it is original, just decent retro reworkings of Ramones, Shins, Clash, you name it they rip it, burn it and steal it. Who doesn't these days? 'Good Cop Bad Cop' reminds me of Angelic Upstarts to further strengthen my case! 'Evil Love', actually sounds like it was recorded by a different band until the rasping vocals, courtesy of Dean, kick in like a Tom Huddlestone free-kick in the nuts.

By the end of the album, less than half an hour later, I feel an odd sense of relief yet stick the whole thing on again to see if there were actually more then three different tunes on here - I was wrong, there were about four. My advice to Limozine? Keep writing the riffs but don't forget to change the tune lads, it does get a bit samey after a while and even your heroes mixed up a bit (well, maybe not The Ramones!). Reckon they make a great live sound though.
