Various Artists - Dance To The Radio 4x12 Volume 4 Single Review
Single Review
This is an eclectic collection of songs from four very different bands signed to Dance To The Radio. Drink Up Buttercup's 'Even Think' sounds like the Flaming Lips have met a sober Andrew W.K. and is a very enjoyable, short track; all emphatic harmonies and power stadium rock keyboards that makes for an extremely entertaining two and a half minutes.
Milk White White Teeth's track, 'The Calendar Will Crawl' is a well-structured pop song with a very insular feel to it. It did not grab me on a personal level but it is certainly very experimental with great bursts of trumpet to add a delicious edge to the regular sound. A solid song.
Super Extra Bonus Party with the help of R.S.A.G. have made a song I can only describe as a Joy Division tribute song played through a psychedelic mist. It's a very curious song, not being terribly progressive or memorable and yet for some reason I still like it. Hmmm.
Final track, 'Getting Loose With The Obtuse' is from 20 year old Leeds man Paul Thomas Saunders. The song is so lo-key it makes you feel a tad uneasy, bringing to mind the haunting beauty of Nick Drake or an on game Paul Simon. It does not quite reach the utterly heartbreaking levels of a Drake song but the arrangement has a simplistic wonder to it and Saunders vocals are certainly steeped in raw emotion. Certainly the musical highlight of the E.P
This is a strange little collection but one that shows Dance To The Radio have a good mix of strong artists and promising ones. Oh, and very strange ones too.
