People - Trashcan Sinatras Single Review

Single Review
Everywhere you look on the net, there are bands who 'could have been' or 'should have been' and most of them seem to come from the mid to late 80's, a period when major labels swallowed talent and then puked it back up when the 'market' disagreed with them.
Irvine's golden treasures, Trashcan Sinatras, suffered the same fate as many other Scottish groups back in the day. Love And Money, The Big Dish, Deacon Blue...they all got a systematic kicking from their labels and dumped in the trashcan. These guys didn't even cross the borders of fate - they stayed in the bum-end of progress and never mustered a Top 50 hit, let alone bother Dave Lee Travis or Janice Long on TOTP. What they did do, however, is write an invincible set of songs called "Cake" that Go Discs released in 1990 to critical acclaim but sod-all sales. The key single, "Opportunity Knocks", still ranks as one of THE best songs of the 90's (yes really - go and find it).
They have recently returned with another accomplished album called "In The Music", "People" being the opening track on the album. They also have a handful of interesting gigs coming up during November - we'll be there at the Bloomsbury performance to give you the full S.P.
Meanwhile, "People" is released as a single on November 9th and is a gentle rustle of the proverbial feathers that will neither offend nor set the world alight. But it WILL appeal to anyone with a love of straight-edged pop music. Not many bands make this kind of music anymore - too busy getting aggressive and getting angry or just opting for shite MOR. These boys (men) know how to craft a song, how to nurture a song. In fact, I like this tune. I've played the bloody thing 8 times now and it sounds better with every play.
TS won't change the world but they will make your world all the better for it. 7 out of 10.
