Single Review

Here's the problem - having listened to The Vivians' latest single 'Just Two Girls' approximately eight times on repeat, I still can't remember how it goes. As soon as it stops, my mind is blank - this song is a big pile of nothing.

This poses a problem when it is my duty to convey to you, the reader, what this song is all about. But thirty seconds in I can't recall how it began and two minutes in I have no idea what was going on a minute and a half ago. You see the dilemma? My only option is to speed type my impression of the track as it plays in a stream-of-consciousness fashion. So here goes...

Hmm, not too bad to begin with... he sounds like a half-arsed Dave Grohl....like it was left on the Foo Fighter's cutting room floor after the Foos went a bit shit. No idea what he's going on about now - there probably are some lyrics, but I'm not sure the singer bothered to learn them. This is where the song becomes a dollop of mush... think I'll gaze out of the window instead...... oh, it's stopped.

'Glass Houses' accompanies 'Just Two Girls' on the release and it is thankfully somewhat more memorable. It has a pleasing Arctic Monkeys-esque guitar riff running through it, giving it a zesty energy, a citrus-flavoured track if you will. There's definitely dance floor potential here, it has a bouncy rhythm and some "heys" to shout along to.

So 'Glass Houses' is definitely worth a listen, while 'Just Two Girls' is, well...dunno. The NME's declaration that The Vivians are "Scotland's answer to the New York Dolls" is pretty incomprehensible - they must have forgotten what The Vivians sound like too.
