Winter Hill - Doves Single Review

Single Review

Oh Doves, you cheeky Mancunians, releasing a song called "Winter Hill" in the middle of a July heatwave so hot I half expect liquid mercury to slide out of the frosty-themed single case instead of a nice shiny CD.

But thankfully I get a nice shiny CD. And I wanted to say it's Brrrrilliant, but can't for two reasons. Firstly, because that's the lamest pun in the entire English language and should be punished by flogging. Secondly, because it's not brilliant: it's pretty good. It's solid Doves.

It starts off well: deep bassy notes, and some looping Chemical Brother synths circa Surrender. Then the drums kick in (average), and the vocals start (average), and there's a bridge build-up towards the end (average). In fact, the transitions between chorus and verse seem to jar, and it all feels a bit forced and overlong.

So whilst it's not the golden days of Break Me Gently or The Man Who Told Everything it does still have that distinct, enchanting, rural Doves atmosphere to it, and that's a lovely thing.
