Terrible Lizard - Terrible Lizard Album Review
Album Review
From the cover art onwards you can tell that this is not going to be the most complicated of albums, and it's true. From the opening bars of 'Sweet Rock 'N Roll onwards this is a vey basic set of songs. However this is not a bad thing at all. The likability of the band and their style of music make this stand out from the crowd and marks 'Terrible Lizard' as a hopeful band of the future.
'Sweet Rock 'N Roll' flows by in a flash with it's old style rock n roll attitude and other tracks like 'Do What You Wanna Do' and 'This Rock' follow the lead with it's harmless and fun attitude. The album showcases the talented vocals of Chris 'Chili' Winters. Think of a mix between Neil Hannon of 'The Divine Comedy' and Jeff Tweedy from 'Wilco' and your somewhere close to his distinctive sound, adding humour and emotion to the music. The album highlight is certainly 'Better Way', a beautiful song about struggling to find simplicity in a complicated life. With a subtle pulse of organs underneath the guitars and mournful vocals it sticks out as the song that could see this band evolve into something much greater. The same applies to album closer 'Walk On By.' They seem to find their more talented side in a raw, dark state.
'Broken Lizards' have come up trumps with a fun, simple album that harks back to a style of band long gone. Let's hope they can bring it back to the fore again.
