Come Up (With Me) - Thea Gilmore Single Review

Single Review
Thea can carve a fine tune most of the time - here is another. The only problem with this single is it sounds a bit like a stab at mainstream radio rather than from the heart. However, it was allegedly written in a tour dressing room so you have to make allowances. Her recent critically-acclaimed album, 'Liejacker', has won over many fans yet this song seems a curious choice for a single. She has the ability to charm the birds from the trees but this will only keep radio stations from suffering heart-attacks when deciding what to fill their breakfast programmes with. This may sound unfair but Thea crafts lovely songs 99% of the time - 'Come Up' is just OK but not stunning. Think Lucinda Williams' 'Passionate Kisses' and you are some way there. A rousing effort but not as substantial as her range suggests. Great that she is supporting Joan Baez at the Royal Albert Hall in October though - she deserves a larger appreciative audience.
