Single Review

I Won't Let You Down is the third release from The Subways, following the free release of Girls & Boys as well as Alright. Both their previous singles received decent airplay from radio and music TV, although I Won't Let You Down has not enjoyed the same.

The song opens with a chunky and rough sounding riff, with bass being noticeably louder than most other bands in the genre. Carrying on with their garage sound throughout, the band combines both Billy Lunn and Charlotte Cooper's voice work in tandem during the chorus. They fail to capture the same results as Alright, with the chorus sounding repetitive and massively unvaried. Although their tandem vocals doesn't need to be abandoned, constantly churning out one sentence choruses with Charlotte Cooper providing backing turns sour pretty quick. Still, the verse and build up to the chorus is quite good. The lyrics aren't bad either, with all of them being based around the love affair between the bands two members Charlotte and Billy, who broke up just before the recording of their second album.

Despite The Subways initially being a breath of fresh air with their tandem vocals and garage sound, they've worn it out now. The band doesn't challenge themselves to think outside the box and therefore they're releases are starting to sound similar. Such is this that I Won't Let You Down has already charted at 137 in the UK, hardly impressive. They definitely need to experiment more and work on their tedious choruses if they're going to re-appear at the top end of the chart. I'd recommend this to anyone who hasn't heard The Subways, if you have then don't waste your time it's nothing new.
