Album Review

The Goo Goo Dolls from Buffalo, New York, have been around for ages, since 1986 in fact. Their biggest hit 'Iris' featured on the Nic Cage and Meg Ryan film City of Angels back in the mid 90s. Their output, in most people's opinion, hit a peak with their album named 'Dizzy Up The Girl' which featured Iris as its main hit. That's not to say that the band do not continue to release decent material, they do, and in 2002 they released the heavier and darker album 'Gutterflower', which may think was largely influenced in terms of content by lead singer Johnny Rzeznik's divorce. 'Let Love In' arrived in 2006 and was also well liked.

Now in 2008 we have Volume One and Volume Two of Goo Goo Dolls: The Best of. Volume One contains 14 previously released tracks with one song, 'Name', re-recorded. It's a good track listing but not much use to fans that already have the Goo's back catalogue.

Volume Two however is a much more interesting prospect. The album features 15 tracks as well as 7 covers. This is impressive in itself as it includes Goo Goo Dolls favourite hits such as 'Long Way Down', 'Lazy Eye', 'Iris', 'Slide', 'Dizzy' and 'Let Love In'. But that's not all. Volume Two also includes 17 studio recorded music videos on a special DVD as well as 6 song live set from Red Rocks.

There's so much on offer here, so whether you're new to Goo Goo Dolls, in which case you are in for a treat, or already a fan there should be plenty to keep you entertained. I'm not sure I've ever seen a band release such a large amount of material in one go, and it's all good quality material too.

The Dizzy, Slide and Let Love In are amongst the best of the videos and while the Live set isn't exactly explosive, it's still an interesting side of the Goos.
