EP Review

Another technoid gem emerging from the Mediterranean borders...!

Hell Yeah Recordings show off their new baby in Pirate Robot Midget, an Italo-French pack of electro dance makers.

Their single, 'It's My Beat Now' (on which, the laconic but catchy spits are delivered by flowful MC, Grand Agent), is due out in mid- September, and by the sound of it, is clearly destined to be played in loop at various 'electrophile' venues across the country.

This EP is a promising taster of things to come, though the industrial 'Sacrum' will have you grind your teeth and, in the eventuality, could possibly be voted the most irritating alarm tone of all time!

On the bright side, the intergalactic 'So Undead', the intro of which is somehow reminiscent of Serge Gainsbourg's on 'Lemon Incest', pays tribute to the best of 1980s minimalist synthpop: figure out a megamix of Eurythmics' 'Sweet Dreams' instrumental version, with the Beverly Hills Cop's 'Axel F' theme-meets-Miami Vice's 'Crockett's Theme', and last but not least, Giorgio Moroder's Midnight Express score...Intrigued? So you should be as this is probably the most interesting track on the record.

Promotion oblige, 'It's My Beat Now', the master track, undergoes two makeovers: one, almost 'trancey' by Dyno (of Mantra Vibes fame); the other, funkier by electro big cheese Riva Starr.

Lend it an ear and mark this name as the Midget might become huge!
