Single Review

To say Almamy's work is unique would be an understatement. Blending some unusually squeal sounding vocals with a colourful mix of backing melodies, Almamy's work cannot be compared to anything I've heard before.

The first track from their two song release is Don't Ask Me, an electronica influenced song with a catchy beat throughout. Almamy's strange sounding voice [you really have to listen to understand] can grate on the ears rather quickly, sounding to obscure and strange to ever break into mainstream music. Still, the songs structure is quite nice and the addition of the trumpet to the backing music is a nice touch.

Almamy's second track draws a similar opinion to the first track. The backing music is great, packed with both bass, guitar and drums without compromising on Almamy's dance-esque sound. Yet the voice from the Senegal singer sounds far too experimental and strange to make the song into a real hit. He has the structure and backing sound done perfectly, but his voice his to childlike and tarnishes his work.

I'd be surprised if Almamy had a hit here. Vocals are the key part of a song and define an artist's sound, and quite simply he hasn't got the right sound to make a hit. Worth a listen if you fancy something a tad odd or if you're a fan of electronica.
