Alternate Endings - Fightstar Album Review

Album Review
Fightstar's Alternate Endings album features unreleased tracks from the past three years. The band stepped into the limelight with their release of One Day Son, This Will All Be Yours which achieved decent critical and commercial success. Alternate Endings is somewhat a b-side album, basically featuring all the songs that ended up on the scrapheap and weren't good enough for album release. It also contains acoustic tracks as well as one or two cover songs.
The best tracks on Alternate Endings are the acoustic tracks. Fightstar recorded acoustic versions of hits 99 & Floods. With 99 being a hard rock sounding song, the softer version on Alternate Endings is a great addition and really shows off former Busted member Charlie Simpson's voice. Floods doesn't sound much different to the original, which isn't necessarily a bad thing as it was Fightstar's best song from their last album. The only noticeable difference when acoustic is it doesn't have the same punchy sounding chorus as before. As well as two of their own songs, Fightstar also included an acoustic cover of nu-metal band Deftones' Minerva, which sounds a completely new song. The song is completely re-worked, ditching the rough sounding rapping for a more melodic vocal sound.
Fightstar's b-side songs aren't half bad either. Dark Star sounds just as good as anything they've released in the past, whilst Amethyst also doesn't fall short of their usual form. The only problem with releasing b-side recordings is they never follow together. Alternate Endings doesn't quite all fit together due to cover versions and tracks being recorded at different times over the last three years. Still, by b-sides album standards, this is a revelation. It doesn't have the usual drivel that comes associated with these sorts of records, and actually contains some quality stuff which maybe they should've used on studio albums. Pleasantly surprising, with shock the sceptics and thrill their fan base.
