Americana is a genre invented by someone in a big magazine office tower block in Central London whilst they were struggling to utter the words "Country" and "Western" without blushing and throwing up their crayfish and rocket sandwich. Listen carefully - its just music, that's all! Genres - pffp! But if I was to suggest this as Country and Western or Americana well, what I mean is, it is American Roots Music. Aaaagh another genre!! Anyway, this is a rather engaging album of whatever genre you want it to be - who cares. Oddly it is the last track, "Under The Big Top", that is worth the admission alone along with close second, "A Housewife's Lament" (the second track!) - really rather lovely songs that drift and strum in a lilting fashion that evokes a time before ours in a faraway land (well, Texas). Very old-time sounds set in a modern world. All checked shirts and railroad building. "Truman" provides a bluesy moment, "Old Time Religion" a lament and "Carver" just plain desolate, rather like Tarnation / Paula Frazer.
It's a traditional sound that won't stun the world but won't harm it either - but she does have a rather accomplished voice that has sung alongside Grammy winners and nominees plus graced a previous set called "The Bootleggers Daughter". I want to see this lady live - I suggest you try too. Check her upcoming Scottish dates soon.
