A Silent Film

Single Review

You would be forgiven for not immediately recognising this band, but if told they have supported the Mystery Jets and were recently on the same bill as the Young Knives, you could assume they are worth getting to know.

'You Will Leave A Mark' has the potential to make listeners sit up and take notice. Beginning with a brief instrumental build up, the track launches into a thunderous bass/guitar combo, which continues throughout. This is the backbone to the track, coupled with the hint of electronica over the vocals.

Lead singer Robert Stevenson has commented on his concern about the lyrics sounding 'too preachy' for listeners; he needn't worry, as listeners will find themselves taken in by the overall sound of the track more than the lyrics. The track is about feeling guilty for being born in the Western hemisphere; when written down this sounds a bit naff and moralistic; thankfully this doesn't translate over to the actual sound. The track is relatively intense due to its subject, but is somehow able to remain inoffensive. Whether this is a good thing depends on your personal taste, but that reason alone could be the downside for this track not getting enough attention.

The comparisons with Keane and Coldplay are not going to subside on this showing, but you can't help feel that it's only when A Silent Film are not mentioned in the same breath as such popular bands that they need worry.

In all worth a listen at least for fans of Keane, Coldplay, or Radiohead, but not something, which will be taking the pop charts by storm without at least one track with a catchy hook. A band to keep an eye on.
