Single Review

Grow fins? No it’s not the latest advice issued by the Met Office, but the new single from East London Lamacq darlings The Brute Chorus. ‘Grow Fins’ tells a well-trodden tale of boy meets girl - with a twist - boy is trapped in a tower block surrounded by water, girl rescues boy, they grow fins and swim off into a watery sunset.

Since starting out gigging at the infamous Hawley Arms, the band has received high praise from all quarters for their blend of stomping, miry, gnashing guitar music. ‘Grow Fins’ is a radio-friendly departure from The Brute Chorus’ usual dirty guttural blues sound. It may in fact be a little too radio friendly for those already firmly on The Brute Chorus bandwagon, but it will no doubt score the band a raft of new fans with its merry shout-along chorus. This track is a musical flash flood, hurtling along with infectious gusto. “Let it rain, let it rain” front man James Steel proclaims – a soundtrack for the British summer is born.
