EP Review

The latest release from Ipswich’s promising dance-influenced indie band, Rosalita’s EP sees three well produced tracks with surprising variation, unusual within the dance/indie genre. The band switch which instrument takes prominence within different tracks, meaning the tracks don’t become too repetitive.

‘What Would Your Mother Say’ is the more typically indie sounding of the three songs, with guitar being the focal point ahead of their keyboard. The track sees an addictive chorus of;

What would your mother do, what would she say, if she found out about the substances you take?

The track features a slower based verse shows the band aren’t just another cocky indie group, and really illustrates their potential.

‘If You Can’t Dance’ is a much more dance focused track, with keyboard from Ben Groom clearly bearing niche-esque qualities. Unlike ‘What Would Your Mother Say’, the guitar isn’t hugely prominent within the song sounding, rather muted. It is less vocal dominated and the band include a long instrumental based around a Matt Bellamy styled fluttering keyboard work.

‘Way Past Bedtime’ is my personal favourite from the EP. Although the verse is perhaps lacking any distinct vocals or lyrics, the crescendo leading up to the chorus and head-bopping lyrics surpass the band’s two previous tracks.

It’s two ‘o clock, it’s way past bedtime, but we both know you’ll be up all night. Times like these I don’t believe where I am.

The disco sounding drums fit beautifully around the track, whilst the introduction to the song would more likely be heard at a Gatecrasher club.

This band has real potential. Putting varying emphasis on different instruments means the band doesn’t sound generic or boring. The dance influences work a charm, the niche styled keyboard work proves a bold yet rewarding addition to the songs. With the current indie scene being more and more based around dance, I’d be surprised if Rosalita fail to get noticed.
