I don’t want to be a soldier that a captain of some sinking ship would stow, far below.
Coldplay’s music has often been known for its deep meaning and clever lyrics, yet the band have never cultivated a song which is easy to grasp and draws the masses instantly. ‘Clocks’ and ‘Shiver’ are both masterpieces, but even the biggest Coldplay fan would admit the songs do require time to grow on them. This is where Violet Hill is different, bearing the fruitful parade styled drumming and muted keyboard until the final verse, Coldplay have left their comfort zone with the song and have attempted something fresh by their standards. The ending is what seals the song, the slow keyboard and downbeat singer Chris Martin’s voice means the lyrics “If you love me, won’t you let me know?” become infused into your mind and typical Coldplay fans remain happy with their dose of keyboard being provided. Still, the song lacks the cleverness of ‘Clocks’ or the shrewd lyrics of ‘Fix You’. It’s a good choice for a single, but be amazed if you’re talking about Coldplay’s best songs and ‘Violet Hill’ is mentioned.
