The Subways

Single Review

'Alright' is the first physical single off the new album entitled 'All or Nothing' (available June 30th) from The Subways, after the initial download single 'Girls & Boys' that racked up a respectable 30,000 downloads.

I saw The Subways live on there debut tour a few years back and they were explosive and raw. This new track doesn't seem to have the same fizz and power that tracks from their debut album (Young For Eternity) had and I'm not bowled over by 'Girls & Boys' personally either, although it's been getting some positive press.

Perhaps, for me, The Subways' passion and exuberance just isn't coming across on these studio tracks as much as they did on their debut album. The chorus of 'Alright' is a bit whining and the harmonies are a little weak. The music doesn't have as much aggression and angst as before, but maybe these are the mellower tracks.

I'll be reporting from the live gig in Leicester tonight so perhaps it will sound better then. For most people bands like The Subways will always obviously sound best live and they've been a massive hit on festival stages across the country for the last few years. But I still think that the best place to experience their lyrical and musical abilities, along with the crazy antics of lead singer Billy Lunn, is in a small venue.
