Maps (How I Feel About You) - Phil Campbell Single Review

Phil Campbell
Single Review
Scotsman Phil Campbell has been knocking around the music scene for around a decade. Not to be confused with his Welsh namesake and lead guitarist from Motorhead, this one-time White Buffalo member has gone solo and is shaking up the UK singer -songwriter scene. He’s the closest thing we have to American sensation Ryan Adams. Campbell doesn’t quite have the stunning vocal qualities of Adams. Maps, nevertheless, is a very strong and catchy single. The template is commercial Americana – masses of strings, harmonica (Neil Young comes to mind), a rustic edge and enough accessibility to impress, with rotation on BBC Radio 2 (B-list), which is where I first heard this song, on Terry Wogan’s morning show Wake Up To Wogan. The summery feel is intoxicating, so let’s hope Maps navigates itself up the charts, rapidly. Check him out on Later..with Jools Holland (BBC 2) this Friday 18 April from 11.35pm.
Album After The Garden is out now.
File under: Mightily impressive.
